Wood Anemone Buttercup family

Wood Anemones grow in open woodland and hedgerows and flowers in spring. It spreads by means of a creeping rhizome, so can form extensive colonies in woods.
The flower has 6 white sepals (not petals) and has no nectar: it is pollinated by bees and pollen-eating flies.

Technical Information
Perennial herb, up to 15 cm tall
Rhizome branches and spreads in loose soil so plant grows in extensive colonies.
Leaves with 3 leaflets, palmately lobed, halfway up stem
Flowers: white (sometimes pink or purple-flushed), 6 sepals, numerous stamens
Flowering time: March-April
Habitat: Dry deciduous woods
Distribution: Common throughout Britain
