Common Mouse-ear |
Campion family |
Cerastium fontanum |
Caryophyllaceae |
Common Mouse-ear is a widespread plant, with soft hairy leaves and five notched white petals.
It is very variable in form:
it is usually prostrate (only a few inches high), but can grow up to 40cm tall in long grass,
and the leaves can be different shades of green or grey-green.
Mouse-ears are similar to chickweeds except that the mouse-ear petals
are generally longer than the sepals, the flower has five stigmas (instead of three),
and the sepals have a silvery border.
