Red Campion grows in shady lanes and hedgerows. It is similar to White Campion , with which it can hybridise to give flowers in various shades of pink.

Perennial or biennial herb, 30-100cm tall, erect Leaves: Basal leaves long-stalked, oval; stem leaves stalkless and narrower, softly hairy Calyx: hairy, blunt teeth Flowers: Deep rose-pink, 25-30mm across, in loose cymes, male and female flowers on separate plants. Pollinated by butterflies Fruit: capsule, teeth bent back Flowering time: mainly March-May, but continues flowering into the autumn Habitat: Woods, hedgerows Distribution: Common throughout most of Britain |
