Dog-rose |
Rose family |
Rosa canina |
Rosaceae |
Dog-roses are thorny shrubs which brighten hedges with splashes of pink flowers in early summer.
The red hips are rich in Vitamin C: these were extensively collected
and made into rosehip syrup during the Second World War.
Within the red hips are hairy seeds.
Robin's pincushions may be found on rose bushes. These are brightly-coloured galls,
which contain the larvae of the small gall wasp (Diplolepsis rosae).
