Wild Service-tree | Rose family |
Sorbus torminalis | Rosaceae |
Wild Service-trees are not common, usually growing only in ancient woodland or hedgerows. The leaves are not unlike those of a maple, except that the lobes are pointed, and it has two large pointed lobes at the base. In autumn the leaves turn first to a cinnamon colour and then to red. The berries are reddish-brown with warty spots. The bark often peels off in rectangular pieces, giving the tree an alternative name of chequers.
