Bilberry | Heath family |
Vaccinium myrtillus | Ericaceae |
Bilberry (also known as blaeberry or whortleberry) is a low-growing shrub of moors and heathlands. It has small pink bell-shaped flowers in spring, and dark blue berries in summer. Although sweet and edible, the bilberry fruits are not generally eaten nowadays, having been superseded by the commercially-grown blueberry, to which they are related.
