Oregon-grape (Mahonia) | Barberry family |
Mahonia aquifolium | Berberidaceae |
Mahonia (Oregon-grape) is a shrub with prickly holly-like leaves,
dense clusters of yellow flowers in spring, and blue-black berries.
The wild species (M.aquifolium) differs from the species grown as a garden shrub (M.japonica):
the latter is a taller more vigorous shrub which flowers in winter.
