Spindles have clusters of inconspicuous flowers in late spring, which are followed by an abundance of three-lobed coral-pink fruits, inside which are seeds with orange pods. The leaves turn gold, purple and red in autumn.
The dense hard wood is used for spindles, skewers, knitting needles and toothpicks. It also makes a high-quality charcoal used by artists.
