An erect summer-flowering plant of hedges and shady places, it has very showy red flowers with white markings when viewed close-up. It is similar to Marsh Woundwort, but has darker red flowers, stalked leaves and solid stems. The name 'woundwort' comes from its use to staunch wounds.
