White Bryony |
Gourd family |
Bryonia dioica |
Cucurbitaceae |
White Bryony is a climbing perennial which grows in hedges and on scrub, more commonly in Southern Britain.
It has spirally-coiled tendrils, and leaves similar in shape to those of ivy.
The spherical fruits progressively turn from green to orange to red in the autumn.
Despite sharing part of its name, it is not related to Black Bryony,
which is also a climbing plant with red berries, but has heart-shaped leaves and no tendrils.
